Best Travel Season

Best travel season to be in Nepal? Well, that depends on the season.

The climate of Nepal can be classified into different types:

Winter (Dec – Feb)

Winter brings cold weather but it’s the great time to visit Nepal for crystal clear skies. Winter in December and January is mostly clear and stable. Speaking of Kathmandu, it does not snow but mornings can be chilly there – and in trekking areas, the cold can make owners shut up shop altogether. This is an excellent time to visit the Terai, and if you can face the cold, you can definitely visit the mountains.

Tips for Winter:

  • Bring your warm clothes and a down jacket. A down sleeping bag is also recommended for trekking.
  • Mountain biking and motorcycle biking is recommended.
  • Visit Chitwan and Bardia and street festival in Pokhara.
  • Visit viewpoints like Nagarkot and Poon hill.

Spring (March-May)

Spring is a popular time to go trekking in Nepal. The temperature climbs steadily and the weather tends to be more stable in this season. Trails are more crowded. Spring features festivals, including Holi in March and Nepalese New Year(Naya Barsa) in April. Spring is the second tourist season, with warmer weather and longer days. Despite the increasing heat, Spring is the best time to visit for viewing wildlife.

Tips for Spring:

  • Best time because of festivals like Holi and Nepali New year.
  • Trails might be crowded so choose lesser-known trek trails.
  • Great time to cross high passes like Larkya La ( Manaslu trek), Kongma La (Three Passes Trek), Thorung La (Annapurna trek) and trek to the high viewpoints of Nepal such as Kala Pattar & Gokyo Ri in the Everest region.

Autumn (Sept – Nov)

Autumn has the big festivals like Dashain and Tihar. Also, it is the popular trek season in Nepal where the sky is clear and blue due to which the prices may be higher and trails may be crowded.

Tips for Autumn:

  • Trails are crowded.
  • Mani Rimdu festival in Tengboche above Namche in the Everest region.
  • Festivals like Dashain and Tihar.
  • September may still have some rain.
  • Chances of Damaged trails due to monsoon.

Summer (June- Aug)

Summer continues in Nepal from June till August.

Tips for Summer:

  • Bring an umbrella and a waterproof jacket and trousers.
  • Beware of leeches, mosquitoes, and other insects.
  • Kora, the cycling challenge that happens every July.
